I Ply with all the cunning of my art
This little thing, and with
consumate care
I fashion it- so that when I depart,
Those who come after me shall f ind
it fair
And beautiful. It must be free of
flaws-
Pointing no laborings of weary hands;
And there must be no flouting of the
laws
Of beauty -as the artist
understands.
Through passion, yearnings inf inite
-yet dumb-
I lift you from the depths of my own
mind
And gild you with my soul’s white
heat to plumb
The souls of future men. I leave
behind
This thing that in return this solace
gives:
“He who creates true beauty ever lives.”

Marcus B. Christian,
“The Craftsman” from The Poetry of the Negro
1746-1970

Oparanze Collective presents Spolia, a collection of furniture and objects inspired by physical and cultural re-use, in response to the Brompton districts theme for this year’s London design festival.

Spolia describes a practice popularly used in medieval ecclesiastical buildings, in which components from other structures are used in newer buildings. This exhibit focuses on the structural and sociocultural aspects of Spolia and interrogates existing normative concerns and aesthetic assumptions of African design.
The themes are explored, developed or indeed challenged via a series of events and talks
